National Geographic claimed that Lake Lure, North Carolina was "one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world." The lake is a short thirty minute ride to Asheville, NC within the Blue Ridge Foothills of Western North Carolina. During the summer, the cool waters of the Lake, with dramatic peaks rising out of the water, draw visitors from all over the country. Overlooking the lake is Chimney Rock State Park, with its breathtaking views and miles of hiking trails. Tubing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and fishing are among the favorite activities.
In the winter time, nearby Maggie Valley and Banner Elk offer skiing and tubing, while Asheville and the famous Biltmore Estate offers up charming shopping, nightlife, and legendary restaurants.
One would be hard pressed not to have seen this beautiful area on the movie screen. Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are favorites of Hollywood; The Last of the Mohicans, Firestarter, the blockbuster hit Dirty Dancing, and many other movies have been filmed throughout Lake Lure's peaks, valleys, and lakes.
Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are beautiful places to visit year-round. The winters are temperate, the summers are warm, and the spring and fall seasons are breathtaking! October through November is "Leaf Season," a glorious explosion of colors - driving the Blue Ridge Parkway may be one of the best ways to enjoy the height of the colors.
